PRAYER AS A STRATEGIC WEAPON IN FRONTIER MISSIONS by John Robb
(Editor’s note: Simply one of the best articles on prayer ever written)For today’s hyperactive missions leaders, apart from opening and closing meetings, saying grace at the table or as a special consolation in time of emergency or stress, prayer is most often treated as a harmless pastime rather than a strategic weapon. In our attitude we often relegate it to the likes of doting old ladies who have nothing better to do with the autumn time of life. Certainly for most mission leaders, prayer does not seem to be where the action is, otherwise wouldn’t we be giving it far more attention in our busy lives?
THE PRAYER OF FAITH BY J.O. FRASER
The first missionary to the Lisu people of the Upper Salween was going through a deep testing. It was not the privation, nor the loneliness of this isolated outpost, nor the rigors of scaling the steep mountain walls to find tribal settlements, nor even the difficulty of making himself at home with these utterly primitive folk-no, none of these things troubled him. But the lack of abiding fruit in the hearts of the Lisu people-this was his constant burden. “Give me Lisu converts,” he cried from the heart, “and I can truly say I will be happy even in a pigsty.”
“PRAYER: THE WORK OF MISSIONS“, by John Piper
A classic message on prayer, delivered by a man of prayer at an ACMC National Conference. One of the most requested tapes in ACMC’s history.
UNDERGIRDING THE EFFORT WITH PRAYER, by J. Christy Wilson
The opening of the Muslim world for the gospel…cannot be organized by human effort or stratagems but only by prayer. Our weapons are spiritual, not carnal. Pray for an army of intercessors to be raised up that a breakthrough as decisive and sudden as that in China and the former USSR may also occur in the Muslim world.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE PRAYER MEETING? by Georger Verwer
Samuel Chadwick, one of God’s great men of past years, taught that Satan’s greatest aim is to destroy our prayer lives. Satan is not afraid of prayerless study, prayerless work or prayerless religion – but he will tremble when we pray. If Chadwick was correct (and many other great men of God have said similar things), then we have a problem. If there is any part of our church life that seems to be in trouble, it is the prayer meeting. IN fact, in an increasing number of churches, for all practical purposes, there is no such meeting at all.
EMPOWERING YOUR CHURCH TO PRAY FOR MISSIONS by Andrew Wheeler
How many people in your church currently pray regularly for missions and specifically for your church’s missionaries? Does the average person in your church actually pray personally for your missionaries? Or is listening to a prayer offered by someone else in a corporate worship service the closest he ever comes? Is there widespread excitement over praying for the lost around the world, or is prayer for missions seen as the special interest of a small handful of people? It has been said that the fruit seen from a missionary’s work is really the harvest of seed previously sown in prayer. If that’s true, what kind of harvest is your church sowing?
PRAYERWALKING by Maggie Crane
Several years ago, I hadn’t heard the term “prayerwalking,” but since then it has become my favorite way to pray. I first came across the term in a book on prayer and missions that I was consulting for a class I was teaching. I was fascinated by the book’s descriptions of people who journeyed to other places to walk and pray. I was intrigued by the answers to prayer that they saw and encouragement that they gave and received. My response to the narratives about prayer walking was awe at God and the desire to be a part of such prayers.
